Os fãs de animês de robôs no dia 29 de fevereiro a 4 de março de 2004, tiveram a grande honra de conhecer Yoshiyuki Tomino, uma lenda viva do mundo da animação japonesa. Convidado pela Fundação Japão para fomentar o intercâmbio entre especialistas e suscitar maior interesse pela cultura japonesa ao público em geral. Tomino realizou em São Paulo e no Rio de Janeiro uma palestra sobre "A Origem do Animê de Robô no Japão". E também falou um pouco sobre a diferença de percepção da arte cinematográfica do japonês, com base na tradição histórica do Japão e na herança cultural oriunda do Kamishibai. E centenas de fãs foram
conferir de perto essa grande palestra. Alguns dias antes de ir ao Rio de Janeiro, Tomino esteve na Universidade de Houston em Houston, Estados Unidos, para uma palestra no evento KamiKazeCon.
Nascido no dia 5 de novembro de 1941, em Odawara, prefeitura de Kanagawa, Japão, Yoshiyuki Tomino começou sua carreira na Mushi Prodution logo após graduar-se na Nihon University. Na Mushi Prodution, Tomino foi um dos responsáveis pela direção do animê Astro Boy (1963) e A Princesa e o Cavaleiro (1967) de Osamu Tezuka. Nos anos 70, Tomino se tornou um "diretor free-lancer" e um mestre quando o assunto era storyboard, emprestando seu grande talento a várias séries do gênero "Super Robô". Desde então, Tomino passou a participar da produção de inúmeras séries como: Mooming, Kyojin-no-hoshi ( Estrela de Kyojin), Umi-no-Triton (Triton do mar), etc. E em 79, Yoshiyuki Tomino criou a série que mais lhe rendeu sucesso, uma série em que conquistaria milhões de fãs no mundo inteiro e
influenciaria diversos artistas famosos: chamada Kidô Senshi Gundam (Mobile Suit Gundam).
Tomino publicou também obras como Senso to
Heiwa (Guerra e paz), Turn A no Iyashi (O consolo do Turn A) e Eizo no Gensoku (As regras das imagens). Hoje, além de dedicar a carreira de diretor, Tomino também leciona como professor universitário.
